Space and
defence venture.

A comprehensive study of the firms financing the future of space and defence technology across the West: who is raising capital, who is writing cheques, and who returns to market next.

A note on this report.

This edition maps the venture funds investing in space, defence and dual-use technology across North America and Europe: 207 firms and 286 funds, the institutions that back them, the portfolios they hold and the capital they are raising now. All data has been drawn from the public record to the best of our ability, and each figure carries its provenance: SOURCED where a public page states it, RECORDED where it is a count from our dataset, and GP-stated where a manager's statement is unconfirmed or cannot be linked. Where a figure is not sourced, as with a currency conversion or a simple projection, it is labelled MODELLED and its method is given, so the reader always knows how a number was reached. Where a source gives no currency, we say so.

In keeping with the terms under which commercial data is licensed, no proprietary database content appears in these pages. Information outside the public record, and any valuation of an individual company, has likewise been withheld.

Thirty funds are profiled in detail, available on request; the rule is on page 20.

A short primer.

Six terms carry most of this report. Readers who work in venture can turn to the summary on p.5.

Venture fundA pool of capital that a manager raises from investors and invests in young private companies over a set period. As those companies are sold or listed, the fund returns the proceeds to its investors. Each fund is a separate vehicle, so one firm can run several at once.
GP (general partner)The firm that manages the fund. It raises the capital, chooses the companies, writes the cheques and often takes a board seat. In this report, "manager" and "firm" both mean the GP.
LP (limited partner)An investor in the fund: a pension plan, insurer, endowment, family office, corporate or government program. LPs commit capital and leave the investing to the GP. Most LPs named here are public institutions that publish their commitments.
CloseA point at which a fund formally accepts commitments. At the first close the fund can begin investing; later closes add LPs until the final close, after which no new investors join. A size announced at a first close is shown as a lower bound (≥).
VintageThe year attached to a fund, used to compare funds raised at the same time. In this report it is the year of the launch or close that the fund's main cited source reports. It is not standardised to first or final close.
SEC Form DA notice a US fund files with the Securities and Exchange Commission when it sells interests privately. It states how much has been sold at the filing date, and amendments (Form D/A) update the figure. A Form D amount records offering progress and does not mark a close. Filings are public on EDGAR, the SEC's filing system, and are linked in the sources.
Also used
Dedicated fund: a fund its manager names as focused on space, defence or dual-use technology. Only dedicated funds enter the capital totals.
Dual-use: technology with both civil and military or security uses.
Lower bound (≥): the size is at least this figure: a first close or an "over" figure.
SBIC leverage: debt guaranteed by the US Small Business Administration that some funds draw on top of LP capital.
Stage and technology: firm-level tags built from the companies on record (p.13).
Reading the figures

Every figure carries a label. SOURCED: a cited public page states it. RECORDED: a count from the Kennox dataset. GP-stated: a manager's statement that is unconfirmed or cannot be linked. MODELLED: a currency conversion or simple projection, with its method. press: reported only by the press, and never part of a headline total.

01 / Summary

Summary.

01
Dedicated funds' disclosed sizes total at least US$14.9 billion, about four-fifths of it in North America.163 dedicated funds: 101 managed from North America, 62 from Europe (RECORDED). The 91 with a size from a primary source or an SEC filing total at least US$14.9 billion (MODELLED): US$12.2 billion in North America (all in the United States), US$2.7 billion in Europe. 49 of those sizes, US$7.1 billion, are SEC Form D amounts sold, so some funds may not yet have closed; the 42 from GP, counsel, LP or regulator releases total US$7.8 billion. 9 sizes reported only by the press or an aggregator are left out.1Europe is the fast follower: 35 of 48 European funds with a known vintage have a recorded vintage of 2024 or later, against 39 of 91 in North America. See pp.6 and 10.
02
Recorded deal activity is at its highest in 2025 and 2026.346 dated, publicly sourced deal records (272 distinct rounds); 217 fall in 2025 and 2026, the most in the records (RECORDED).2Round counts reflect what public sources cover, and recent rounds are better covered. See p.8.
03
Trade sales drive liquidity so far; 2026 has the most exits on record.70 backed companies have exited: 44 sales, 21 listings, 4 shutdowns and 1 other exit. 2026 has 18, the most on record; 2021, the SPAC year, has 16 (RECORDED).3Each company counts once, however many funds backed it. See p.7.
04
Of the thirty profiled, 14 name a public LP and 12 name no LP at all.The other four name only private or pension LPs: Lakestar (BAE Systems, press; vehicle not named), Harpoon and Marlinspike (public-employee pension plans; Marlinspike also an investment firm) and CDP Venture Capital / Obloo (Neva SGR with Compagnia di San Paolo). (RECORDED)4 See pp.15–16.
05
Several managers already have a successor fund on record.Five of the thirty have a next fund on record, led by Shield Capital, which is raising Fund II (US$257.5M sold of US$350M under SEC Form D, with its parallel vehicle) (SOURCED); Alpine Space Ventures, Squadra, Red Cell and Space Capital have SEC filings for theirs. Across the dataset, a further 31 dedicated funds are in market with only a first close or no public close yet (RECORDED).5The next raise for this field is already under way. See p.14.
A note on the data. Compiled from public sources to 31 October 2026. Sizes are shown in the currency the source states; totals across currencies use the dataset's central-bank annual average rates (for 2026, the January–October average) and are MODELLED. Material from licensed databases, round sizes, valuations and per-company values are excluded.Labels. SOURCED: a cited public page states the figure. RECORDED: a count or event as recorded in the dataset. MODELLED: a currency conversion or a projection labelled with its method. GP-stated: a manager's statement not confirmed elsewhere, or a GP figure that cannot be linked here. Press: reported only by the press; never in totals. Full definitions on p.20.

2026 runs to 31 October 2026, the dataset’s cut-off.

Reading the chart
2026 is already the largest year for new fund formation on record, with 31 funds to 31 October.
35 of 48 European funds with a known vintage have a recorded vintage of 2024 or later.
24 funds have no vintage on record and are not shown.

Counts of fund rows (RECORDED). A vintage is the year of the launch or close a fund's main cited source reports, re-checked against that source for this edition; it is not standardised to first or final close, so it can differ from a close cited elsewhere.

By manager region
101 dedicated funds are managed from North America: 97 from the United States, 4 from Canada. 91 have a vintage on record; 39 of those have a recorded vintage of 2024 or later.
62 dedicated funds are managed from Europe. 48 have a vintage on record; 35 of those have a recorded vintage of 2024 or later.

Counts of fund rows (RECORDED), as on p.5.

Sums of sizes as their sources state them, never combined across currencies (RECORDED). Sums include 11 lower bounds. A primary source is a release from the GP, fund counsel, an LP or a regulator. The US-dollar sum includes 49 SEC Form D amounts sold, which record offering progress only.

A further 9 dedicated funds have a size only from a press report or an aggregator (SOURCED); they are not in these sums. In US$, the 42 sizes from GP, counsel, LP or regulator releases total US$7.8 billion and the 49 Form D amounts sold US$7.1 billion (MODELLED). Each band includes its lower bound. The three funds of US$1B and over are American Dynamism Fund II (US$1,176M, GP release) and US Innovative Technology Fund and its Parallel Fund II (SEC Form D amounts sold, US$2.9B together); each parallel fund reports its own sales and is counted as a fund. Without the three, the total is US$10.8 billion; without American Dynamism Funds I (US$600M) and II, US$13.1 billion (MODELLED). First In's US$148M, which includes SBA-guaranteed leverage, is in these sums. None of the 4 Canadian dedicated funds (ONE9 Special Mission Fund I, the ONE9 / Sentinel platform, Tidal Fund II and the Sea-to-Space Ventures fund in formation) has a sourced size.

Stage and technology.

Two tags for each of the thirty, built only from the Kennox dataset. Stage is the range of rounds at which the firm first backed the companies on record; technology is the firm's two most common technology groups. Both are firm-level, since most sources do not name the vehicle. The figure in brackets is the number of companies behind each tag, and 'Not recorded' means the dataset holds no named round or sector for that firm.

RECORDED. Stage: the earliest and latest named entry round (incubation, pre-seed, seed, then Series A onward) among the firm's companies on record, each company counted once at its earliest named entry. Technology: each company's recorded sector description, grouped by Kennox into launch and propulsion; satellites and EO (Earth observation); in-space infrastructure; communications; sensing and SSA (space situational awareness); autonomy and drones; counter-drone and air defence; munitions; maritime systems; navigation and timing; AI and software; cybersecurity; compute and chips; quantum; and manufacturing and materials. The two largest groups are shown, ties in that order. Counts include the firm's other funds. Neither tag is a stated mandate, and a fund's own release may describe its strategy differently. Tags resting on one or two companies are indicative only.

The EIF row includes commitments to vehicles outside the dedicated band: Kembara €350M, Nazca €40M and Radix €25M (the last per a PFR Ventures release). BBB's two stated amounts are both Seraphim commitments (£30M to its first fund in 2016, US$20M to SSV II); BBB's 2026 release gives £40M for the 2016 commitment, and the 2016 release's £30M is used. Under the SBICCT initiative, the SBA, in partnership with the US Department of Defense, licenses funds to borrow leverage it guarantees; the SBA is not an LP and is not listed. No US federal LP programme is mapped; In-Q-Tel is carried as a government-backed investor with 1 deal record. Public LPs here are government bodies and government-backed funds; public-employee pension plans are counted as pension LPs (p.5).

RECORDED from the LP and deal records, firm-level for leads, which are partial. Fund overviews on request (p.25).

Method and notes.

1. Scope. Venture funds that invest in space, defence and dual-use technology, managed from North America (United States and Canada) and Europe (EU and EFTA members, the UK, European NATO members and Ukraine): 207 firms and 286 fund records, with their LPs, deals and exits, to 31 October 2026. Dedicated funds enter the capital totals; other vehicles are carried to map co-investors and LPs and counted separately. A generalist firm's vehicle counts as dedicated only where the firm names it as one.
2. Sources. Fund, counsel, LP, government, company and acquirer releases, SEC Form D and exchange filings, and press. Each figure carries its source in the dataset.
3. Exclusions. Material from licensed databases is excluded, including rows sourced only to one. No round sizes, valuations, per-company values, IRR or DPI are given. Defence buyout, infrastructure and private credit funds are out of scope.
4. Labels. SOURCED: a cited public page states it. RECORDED: a count or event as recorded in the dataset. MODELLED: currency conversion at central-bank annual average rates (ECB, Bank of England, Bank of Canada; for 2026, the January–October average) as recorded in the dataset, or a simple projection labelled with its method. GP-stated: a manager's statement about its plans or activity, not confirmed elsewhere, or a GP figure whose source cannot be linked here. A fund size in a GP's own release or post is SOURCED. 'inferred': linked by the dataset to the firm's fund active at the deal date (‡). Lower bound: a first close or an 'over' figure, shown as 'at least'. 'Currency not stated in source': the source gives no currency.
5. Sizes. Final close where public, else the latest disclosed close; a target, cap or 'up to' figure is never a size. A size counts only where a page states the amount and the currency. SEC Form D amounts sold record offering progress and are shown as such, never as a final close; a GP close is used where one exists. Press-only and aggregator sizes are shown labelled and never enter totals, medians or headlines. Where sources disagree, the primary source is used and the difference noted. Figures are shown in the currency stated by the source; US$ unless marked €, £, C$ or NOK, except where marked "currency not stated in source".
6. How the thirty were chosen. One rule, applied to the dataset: funds in the dedicated band; a size from a GP, fund counsel, LP or regulator release (Form D-only and press-only sizes excluded); vintage 2022 or later; one fund per firm, the largest. The thirty largest by size in US$ at dataset exchange rates (MODELLED) are profiled. Lower bounds rank at their stated floor; ties go exact first, then alphabetical. Three more funds meet the rule and rank 31st to 33rd: SV Andromeda Fund (at least US$23M), Space.VC Fund II (US$22.5M), Final Frontier Liftoff (€4.5M). First In Ventures Fund 3 SBIC Critical Technologies ranks on US$148M of investable capital, including SBA-guaranteed leverage. Cantos Fund IV ranks on a GP-stated US$70M whose post cannot be linked (its address names a person) and is not in the totals. The ranking says nothing about performance.
7. Performance. Book value, dry powder and reserve need would be modelled figures, and TVPI and DPI are reported only by managers; none is shown. Any projection is labelled MODELLED, with its method shown.
8. Status of companies. Active (no exit on record), acquired (buyer, year), listed (exchange: ticker, year; SPACs and direct listings included) shut down (year) or other exit (such as a recapitalisation), as recorded at 31 Oct 2026, each exit with a public exit source. A sale that is agreed but not closed is not an exit. Exits are counted once per company at the earliest public exit date. Companies are named for a fund only where the source names the vehicle; otherwise they are named for the firm (†), another fund of the firm (§) or the fund active at the deal date (‡).

PAGE 05 · SUMMARY

  1. Kennox space and defence dataset, fund records, funds in the dedicated band, including American Dynamism Fund II (counted as dedicated, as Fund I is). Sizes counted, as stated by each source: 42 from GP, counsel, LP or regulator releases and 49 SEC Form D amounts sold; 8 sizes reported only by the press and 1 aggregator figure are not counted. 11 are lower bounds (a first close or an 'over' figure): 80 exact sizes total US$13.2 billion and 11 lower bounds at least US$1.7 billion. Conversion to US$ at ECB, Bank of England and Bank of Canada annual average rates (for 2026, the January–October average) as recorded in the dataset (MODELLED). Vintage: the year of the launch or close the fund's main cited source reports, re-checked against that source for this edition; not standardised to first or final close.
  2. Kennox space and defence dataset, deal records: 1,222 rows, of which 812 record only that a fund backs a company (no round or date) and are excluded here; 62 rows give no round date and are not counted; 1 row with an approximate date ('by September 2023') is not counted; 1 row sourced only to a licensed database is excluded. 1,222 − 812 − 62 − 1 − 1 = 346. Counts only; no round sizes.
  3. Kennox space and defence dataset, exit records: 98 rows, one per backer per exit. 96 rows record a completed exit and cover 70 companies, each counted once at its earliest public exit date. Two announced but not closed sales are not counted (Atlas Space Operations, NetRise). Exit sources are listed with page 07. SpaceX listing (Nasdaq: SPCX, first traded 12 June 2026): SpaceX release, 11 June 2026, https://ir.spacex.com/updates/releases-details/2026/Space-Exploration-Technologies-Corp--Announces-Pricing-of-Initial-Public-Offering/default.aspx; CBS News, 12 June 2026, https://www.cbsnews.com/news/spacex-stock-price-ipo-spcx-initial-public-offering/.
